The Story of a Captain

This is the tale of a captain. Not the type of captain that flies around the sky while recklessly shooting down enemy aircraft as he whispers to his deceased friend like some insane maverick. Or even the type of captain that commands a cruise liner full of tourists held hostage until they all find love. This is merely the story of a guy that takes control of someone else’s boat in search of solitude, inner peace, and the serenity that hides deep within the souls of each and every one of us. If he finds it before his story ends, well, there will be a better chance for a sequel to this story.
Captain Erik Harris was born a swab to a pair of powerboaters in the Pacific Northwest but was upgraded to the Shellback class of mariners while in the South Pacific in 1996. In 2002, he was exposed to sailing and quickly began competing in local regattas around North Texas. In 2020, Captain Erik received his Merchant Mariner Master license through the United States Coast Guard and became a member of the American Sailing Association in 2022, shifting from competitive sailor to casual cruiser. In 2023, after living aboard a ketch and sailing around the Bahamas and Western Caribbean, he returned to Texas and became an ASA instructor in the hopes of spreading his knowledge and passion to all of those interested a similar desire to explore new places inaccessible to most, along with being an ambassador for humanity to the people and cultures encountered off the beaten path. Please help us welcome Captain Erik to the WSV family!

THE NORDY REPORT
Update from the Nordys/May ‘24

We set sail from Colombia in February and charted a course towards Panama. Our check-in to the country was quite an adventure. It was a tumultuous voyage that we now look back on with fondness and relief. Our original plan was to make a beeline for the San Blas islands, but we ended up getting lost in remote anchorages that were surrounded by mangroves and uninhabited islands. It was just the kind of peace and solitude we craved after all the hustle and bustle of Colombia. We lived off-grid for nearly two months, exploring the hidden corners of the east coast of Panama.

Around the beginning of April, we finally ventured into the San Blas archipelago and were blown away by our first anchorage at Waisaladup, a small island that has wonderful protection from the ocean swell and minimal wind waves – at least for this time of year. Other islands are so close that we can venture out on the dinghy to explore, free-dive, and chill on more deserted beaches by ourselves. The vibe here is more low-key and chill than in the Eastern Caribbean, and while I will always be a Soca girl in spirit, we are soaking up the tranquility of quiet anchorages and more time just hanging out together, whether it’s playing a game in the cockpit or cooking a meal together in our tiny kitchen.
It’s always exciting to wonder where the next adventure will take us. At the moment, we’re simply basking in the beauty of Panama. From its vibrant culture to its awe-inspiring natural wonders, we can’t get enough of this incredible country. And the best part? We’ve only scratched the surface of what Panama has in store for us. Who knows what other hidden gems we’ll discover along the way!
